Croft Pascoe.

Yesterday we paid a visit to Croft Pascoe Plantation.
We found this enormous Horse-Fly, about an inch and a half,
which is apparently the largest in the country.

TABANUS SUDETICUS

TABANUS SUDETICUS

COMMON CROSSBILL

We saw around 30 Crossbills, the first we have seen in Cornwall. It was very windy so lucky to get any kind of shot.

SPOTTED FLYCATCHER

GATEKEEPER

RED ADMIRAL

SMALL TORTOISESHELL

We have included the Butterflies because we have
seen hardly any of the last 2 this year.

  1. That horsefly is a corker mate bit green about that one, Crossbills are great and as for the butterflies hardly any in the garden in spite of growing friendly plants for them this year, have only had one Small Tortoiseshell on a regular basis.
    CU SOON.

  5. More great photos!!

Does the Tabanus Sudeticus give a 'bite' commensurate with its size? If so, I'll stay away thank you!

So pleased you got your first Cornish Crossbills.

    Best regards. Richard

  7. Hi! All great photos as usual. Those Horseflies really give a nasty bite. My husband was bitten by one on his leg, and it became so swollen that his trousers had to be cut away. They like to alight on you when we are wet from being in the pool or in a river, and if you don't notice, your in big trouble! Sorry I have rambled on a bit!
    Warm regards.
