Hayle Estuary and St.Gothians.

This is our first posting for several weeks. Firstly John was working nights and then we were away for our sons wedding so that put us behind with the blog but then disaster struck!
The computer crashed so badly that we lost everything from January 1st. PC World tried but everything got scrambled! Most of our best stuff is on the blog and I know that I can 'right click' and 'save as', but the picture saves as little more than a thumbnail and trying to enlarge it just breaks up the pixels. This is better than nothing I suppose but if anyone knows of a way to send the pictures from the blog to a folder on the (new) computer in a decent size I would be very greatful. These are what we still had on a memory card from the last couple of weeks.

We took these yesterday at Hayle and St. Gothians Sands. John's gone to Stithians so there
may be something later.

I thought I'd try posting pictures in a larger format just to see what it looked like, although as most of you know, you only have to click on a picture to enlarge it.

  2. John and Sue ~ I'm so sorry to hear about your computer and photos. I don't know how to help you sorry. I have never stored my photo's on my computer for this very reason...just in case. I use High Definition Sony portable plug in storage cards. I'm also burning some of my best shots onto DVD disks...again another back up plan. I love your shots as always and I will ask around for you to see if we can save what is on your blog into a larger format.

    My Warmest Regards

    Crista

  3. I was only saying today at the Porthgwarra seawatch that you have been out of circulation. It is a shame your PC has broken down, I find them frustrating has hell. My blog has sufferred due to me falling and busting my camera. Anyway, a great set of shots and you have identified a moth for me that I photographed in the garden, (as I am Sad at moth and butterfly ID) a Brimstone.

  4. A crashed pc; I can relate to that. Mine did the same towards the end of July. Thankfully I'd backed up all my pictures to the end of June, so not a complete disaster, but a lot of other stuff lost with Julys pictures. Try a google search of 'upsizing software'. A few links that may help?

The pictures. Superb as always. The Painted Lady on the finger especially. And the birds.

  5. Excellent set of photos, John/Sue.

Regards losing all your pics. All your blog photos are automatically stored on a picasa web album, which you can access from your google account.

  8. Lovely images Sue. Trevor and I were wondering if all was ok or if you were away. So sorry about your computer. We had exactly the same problem. Luckily all our holiday memories were saved on backup discs so that was something. Hope you get them back.

  10. Hi John & Sue
I was begining to wonder what had happened to you folks,Sorry to hear about the pc I think most everyone has had this at some time, and nothing can replace all those lost photo's. I agree with Dean try pulling them back from Picasa Album. For the future I suggest you store them also on external HD's, I use 2 one to back up all my Raw Files and one to store all my converted and finished files. Anyway apart from that great set as always superb shots and congrats on your sons wedding, Hope to bump into you soon, Welcome Back

  11. Crashing computer - oh how I feel for you. Glad you've now got another up and running. As Dean says, all your pictures are stored in the (Google) Picassa online photo album and you can download them from there. I believe you will be able to download them in the original size they were when you uploaded them to your blog.

Having said all that, your "come back" pictures are great!

  12. I'm so sorry your computer crashed taking your photos with it. I would be devastated. Since I have had a computer crash before I do keep an external backup and also burn photos to DVDs and try to do it every few weeks. At least your loss was only from January 1, but that is a whole lot of photos. As others have said you should be able to get any that you've put on your blog off of Picasa. I have downloaded a photo from there before so it will work. Good luck on rettrieving as much as possible.

The photos you have posted today are outstanding. You have such variety and I didn't see a single one that I didn't like. But then I always enjoy a visit to your blog.

  13. Bad luck with the computer J&S. The gremlins have got my camera now and I am well cheesed off.. so I know how you feel...actually mine packed up not so long ago and I had to install everything including the OS from stratch.
The main thing is your best shots are probably on your blog so not a complete disaster.
    Beautiful pictures again as usual.

  15. Hi John, Sue,

Good to see you back on line again. Nice pictures. I always put my original files on one hard drive and my converted JPG's on another. Following your unfortunate incident I may well copy the originals and converted JPG's to another external hard drive. I always post 800 pixels wide along the longest edge for the blog. Although this is big for the web, should I have a computer failure at least I know I have some decent images on Picasa as another back up. Anyway good luck with the new computer and blog.

  16. Sure is a nice collection of photographs. I used to post all my pictures 1050 pixels wide. People are astonished to see things that big on a blog but it is possible.

  17. Hi John & Sue. Another great series & I like the larger format on the blog.
Sorry to hear about the crashed PC. Personally I copy & backup all originals & converted files to a seperate hard drive just in case! Hope you are able to recover what you need from Picassa Web Albums. FAB

  18. Hi, John and Sue. I can certainly relate to computer-crashing woes. Our hard drive fried a couple of years ago, and though we tried to back up our photos routinely onto CD, we thought we had lost a whole years worth of photos. Hubby had some important work documents on there as well, so we sent the hard drive off to a data recovery place in California. It cost a small fortune, but they were able to recover almost everything. We now back-up to an external hard drive.

Your photos here are wonderful. Some of your insects remind me of similar varieties we have here.

  19. Hi John and Sue,

Firstly, I am really sorry to hear that you have had PC problems, boy oh boy when that happens it is the most frustrating thing you can imagine. I learnt the hard way...so no more. I only wish I could give you some advice here, but I would only repeat what the other good folk above have done. Hope you find a way to retrieve you lost photo's.

The photo's that you have posted are just brilliant as always. Keep it going, don't let the pc issues deter you.

    All the best.

    John

  20. Hello John and Sue
Just stopped by to say thank you for visiting my blog. I have been so terrible about posting and visiting lately.
Love your shots. I wish I had a longer zoom on my lens to get the birds that are too far away. Eventually, maybe! I have been spending most of my online time on Facebook. Check it out sometime. I have a lot of pictures on there.
Have a great rest of the week.
    Lisa

  21. These are a great set of images, thanks for posting. I don't think you can do anything about retrieving full size images from the blog as I think they are downsized when you upload them.

  22. Thank you for all your suggestions and commiserations. We usually only back-up to a disc at the end of the year but will be more careful from now on.

  24. Hi John and Sue. - I know how you feel - when I moved to Australia I unpacked my pc, switched on and all was good. Next day the hard drive had seized.......and it cost me GBP500 to recover only half of my photos. Now I back everything to CD/DVD - time consuming, but worth it!!
